Non-profit Education and Production ofSubculture: Examination of Waldorf Education

Abstract:Public primary and secondary education in China often fallsinto the strange circle of exam-oriented education. Some dissatisfied parentsand teachers begin to seek alternative education models. Therefore,some pri-vate non-profit schools that advocate the practice and concept of holistic edu-cation came into being. The Waldorf education system introduced from Germa-ny is one of the large-scale educational practices in contemporary China's pri-vate non-profit education. Since the first Waldorf school was founded in Chinain 2004,it has caused a “fever”of Waldorf education in China. Throughethnographic research,the author finds that Waldorf education in China isnot only a response to the dissatisfaction of mainstream school education,butalso involves a series of self practice and life arrangement dominated by themiddle class. In a series of educational practices,such as school education,teacher education,family education and self-education,a subculture groupwith style significance is regenerated: “sub-culture circle of Waldorf ”.
